TFSA room starts accumulating the year you turn 18 and are a Canadian resident with a valid SIN. You do not need to earn income or open an account to accumulate room. Unused room carries forward indefinitely.
Any amount withdrawn from your TFSA is added back to your contribution room on January 1 of the FOLLOWING calendar year. Withdrawing and re-depositing in the same calendar year without available room results in a 1% per month over-contribution penalty.
