Net\ Super\ Credited = Gross\ Contribution - ESCT\ DeductedInland Revenue requires employers to withhold Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT) from super contributions before crediting to an employee's KiwiSaver fund. The ESCT rate (10.5% up to 39%) is determined by the employee's total remuneration threshold from the previous tax year.

ESCT is a tax on employer contributions made to an employee's KiwiSaver or registered super scheme. The employer deducts ESCT directly from their contribution and remits it to Inland Revenue, depositing the net amount into the employee's fund.
The 2025/2026 ESCT rate thresholds are: $0 to $16,800 at 10.5%; $16,801 to $57,600 at 17.5%; $57,601 to $84,000 at 30.0%; $84,001 to $216,000 at 33.0%; and over $216,000 at 39.0%.
If an employee's PAYE marginal rate exceeds their applicable ESCT rate threshold, salary sacrifice allows funds to enter KiwiSaver at the lower ESCT tax rate rather than the higher PAYE rate, generating net tax arbitrage.
Under total remuneration packages, employer KiwiSaver contributions and ESCT are funded from the agreed total package, effectively adjusting the base salary component downward.
