Working for Families is a package of tax credits to help families raising dependent children aged 18 or younger in New Zealand. At least one parent must be an NZ citizen or permanent resident who has been in NZ continuously for 12 months.
For a baby's first year of life (up to their 1st birthday), Best Start is 100% universal and not income-tested. Every eligible NZ family receives $73.88 per week ($3,842/year). For children aged 1 and 2, it is income-tested and begins abating at 21% once family income exceeds $79,000.
To qualify for the In-Work Tax Credit (IWTC), couple families must work at least 30 hours per week combined, while single parents must work at least 20 hours per week, without receiving an income-tested main benefit from Work and Income.
