The standard Child Tax Credit ($2,000 per child) is first applied to reduce your federal income tax liability to zero. If your tax bill drops to $0 and you still have credit remaining, the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) pays up to $1,700 per qualifying child directly into your bank account as a cash tax refund.
The full credit is available for married couples filing jointly with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) up to $400,000, and single / head of household parents with an AGI up to $200,000. Above these thresholds, the credit phases out gradually by $50 for every $1,000 of income in excess of the limit.
The $500 non-refundable Credit for Other Dependents covers children aged 17–18, full-time college students aged 19–23 whom you support, elderly parents, and disabled adult relatives who live with you and satisfy IRS dependency support tests.
The IRS allows you to claim a percentage (20% to 35% depending on your AGI) of up to $3,000 in qualifying childcare expenses for one child, or up to $6,000 for two or more children. Qualifying costs include licensed daycare centers, preschool programs, and summer day camps incurred so parents can work.
