Under the SECURE 2.0 Act signed into law, the starting age for Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) is: • Age 73 for anyone reaching age 72 after December 31, 2022 (individuals born between 1951 and 1959). • Age 75 starting on January 1, 2033 (individuals born in 1960 or later).
No. Original owners of Roth IRAs are NEVER required to take RMDs during their lifetime. Starting in 2024, designated Roth accounts in employer plans (like Roth 401(k)s) are also exempt from lifetime RMDs under SECURE 2.0.
SECURE 2.0 significantly reduced the harsh IRS excise tax penalty from 50% down to 25% of the amount not distributed. Furthermore, if you correct the shortfall and submit Form 5329 within the 2-year correction window, the penalty is further reduced to just 10%.
If you are age 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $105,000 per year directly from your Traditional IRA to a qualified charity. This counts toward satisfying your mandatory RMD for the year, but is 100% excluded from your taxable income, providing significant tax savings.
