A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n·t) + PMT × [((1 + r/n)^(n·t) − 1) / (r/n)]Compound interest calculates returns not only on your initial principal (P), but also on the accumulated interest from prior periods and your ongoing periodic contributions (PMT). As the investment horizon (t) extends, portfolio wealth grows exponentially rather than linearly.

Simple interest pays a fixed return strictly on your original principal amount every period. Compound interest reinvests each period's earned interest back into the principal balance so that your interest itself earns interest in subsequent periods, creating an exponential snowball effect over long time horizons.
The Rule of 72 is a classic financial logarithmic approximation used to estimate how many years it takes for a lump-sum investment to double under compound interest. Simply divide 72 by your annual percentage return: at 12% annual return your money doubles in roughly 72 / 12 = 6 years; at 8% it doubles in about 9 years.
When interest is compounded monthly (12 times a year) instead of annually, interest credited in January immediately starts earning interest in February. For example, a 12% nominal annual rate yields an Effective Annual Rate (APY) of (1 + 0.12/12)^12 − 1 = 12.68% under monthly compounding, significantly boosting long-term wealth.
Even with a modest initial deposit, consistent monthly contributions (Dollar-Cost Averaging) inject fresh principal into the compounding engine every month. Over 10 to 20 years, the cumulative compound interest generated by those monthly additions typically surpasses the total cash you deposited out of pocket.
The calculator projects nominal portfolio growth based on the rate entered. To model your future purchasing power in today's money (real return), enter your after-tax, inflation-adjusted rate using the Fisher equation—for example, a 12% nominal return with 3% inflation equals roughly an 8.74% real annual return.
Because time (t) sits in the exponent of the compound interest formula, duration is the most powerful lever over the long run. Starting 5 to 10 years earlier often produces a significantly larger final portfolio than contributing double the amount later, as the steepest wealth acceleration occurs in the final years.
